Does anyone remember the days of posers, preps, jocks, goths, punks and skaters? Back in the day you had to commit to one group and that was it. There was no blending…if you hung out with the goths you bet your ass no one would be caught dead listening to Eminem or Nelly. It wasn’t like it is now where kids can listen to a blend of music genres and dress with a multitude of borrowed styles; everyone had an unspoken uniform to maintain (Trip pants & spiked collars for the goths, Hollister shirts & seashell necklaces for the preps, Chucks or Dr Martens for the punks, multi-colored shoelaces & puffy Vans for the skaters etc.). Also, if you were able to transition yourself from the normal/bland kid into one of the alternative groups without getting slapped with the dreaded POSER label, you were naturally cool.
Oh, and during that time, I remember those labels extending waaay past adolescence and into adult lifestyles (I remember adult goths who owned record stores or hair salons, and adult skaters and punks who still fucked shit up, pissed on cop cars and wore Vans and Chucks till death do them part).
I have no idea why I’m thinking about all this…but occasionally I’ll catch a song from my youth and suddenly all these old memories and thoughts come flooding back. Time is a strange thing, huh?
I am garbage. I am trash. I am a trashy garbage human bag.
